Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids
When a child comes to see us for routine preventive care, our number one goal is to make sure that they feel comfortable in the dental office, and once we have that handled, Dr. Funk will examine their teeth and gums for any damage or decay, explaining everything as he goes. He’ll then discuss his observations with you and talk about any additional treatments your child might need. After that, they’ll get a refreshing cleaning from one of our hygienists.
Dental Sealants
The teeth come in many different shapes, and the back teeth, with their flat and pitted surfaces, are the most likely to develop cavities. The deep grooves can easily trap plaque and bacteria, and they can be especially hard for young children to adequately clean while brushing. To give these teeth some extra protection, we can apply a plastic-based substance to them. It will quickly harden into a thin, practically invisible barrier that literally seals the tooth off from food particles, plaque, and bacteria.
Fluoride Treatments
Fluoride can help strengthen the teeth and lower a child’s risk of developing cavities, and it can also aid in the development of a child’s adult teeth before they even come in. That’s why, at your child’s regular checkups, we’ll give them a topical fluoride treatment. They’ll simply rinse their mouth with a highly-concentrated fluoride solution for a few minutes, and that’s it! It’s a quick and easy way to give them an extra weapon in the fight against tooth decay.
Orthodontics
We recommend that your child should have a complete orthodontic evaluation around the age of seven. At this stage of development, Dr. Funk will be able to tell if their adult teeth will come in straight or if they will need braces. If they do, don’t worry, because Dr. Funk can provide them himself. With them, he can easily correct and even prevent problems such as crooked teeth, crowded teeth, gapped teeth, and even an overbite, underbite, or crossbite.
Tooth-Colored Fillings
While we do everything we can to prevent cavities for our younger patients, they do still happen from time to time. Fortunately, we have a restorative solution that can make them seemingly disappear. Tooth-colored fillings are made of a composite resin material that can be shaded to match any enamel color, making the restoration look just like natural dental structure. They only take one appointment to place, and the procedure is entirely painless.
Athletic Mouthguards
Do you have a little athlete at home? After they put on their helmet, shin guards, and elbow pads, make sure they have something protecting their teeth as well. Up to 40% of all dental injuries are sports-related! Instead of trying to get them to wear a bulky “one-size-fits-all” mouthguard, Dr. Funk can custom-make one just for them. It will be shaped to fit their particular teeth, providing a better shield for their smile, plus it will be much more comfortable and allow for unimpeded breathing and speaking.
