Since Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments, patients often assume they know everything about life with clear aligners… until their consultation. This is often the first time they hear about interproximal reduction, attachments, and wear times, which can understandably be quite overwhelming. To prevent that from happening, keep reading to learn a few things you should know before getting Invisalign.
1. Your Dentist May Need to File Your Teeth
If your case of overcrowding is more severe, then there may not be enough room for your teeth to move. Instead of removing one or more of your teeth, your dentist can use IPR (interproximal reduction). This completely painless process involves slightly filing down your teeth so they can easily be guided into their properly aligned positions.
2. You Need to Wear Your Trays for 22 Hours a Day
If you choose traditional braces, you don’t have to worry about wear times – the brackets and wires are bonded to your teeth! Since clear aligners are removable, patients need to make an active effort to meet the 20-22 hour-a-day wear time. Fortunately, there are several tools available to help make this goal easy, like the Invisalign app.
3. Some Discomfort Is to Be Expected, But It’s Temporary!
All orthodontic treatments, including Invisalign, come with some soreness. The good news is that this sensation will go away as your teeth adjust to their new positions. Plus, there are several ways you can ease your discomfort in the short term, including taking OTC pain medication (as directed) and avoiding tortilla chips, thin pizza crust, and other crunchy foods.
4. Your Treatment May Come with Accessories
When patients hear “Invisalign,” they often think “clear aligners.” However, it’s possible for your treatment plan to include other orthodontic accessories, like attachments and rubber bands. These are designed to address more moderate cases of malocclusion.
5. You Need to Brush and Floss After Each Meal
In order to keep your teeth decay-free and your trays stain-free, you need to brush and floss after each meal. This might seem like a difficult task at first, especially if you work in an office or go out to dinner with friends often. To help, keep a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss with you so you can complete your oral hygiene regimen on-the-go!
